Whole Body Benefits of Epsom Salt
Whole Body Benefits of Epsom Salt
Summer, summer, summertime!
Summer is an especially good time to detox because of the heat. Sweating is a natural detox method and it's hot in the summer, so it just makes sense. Another thing that often happens in the summer is a lot of activity. Whether it’s going on hikes, beach days, or finally getting in the swing of things with regular workouts (weightlifting anyone?), this can mean sore muscles. Put the two things together and I want to talk about one of my favorite ways to both support the body’s natural detox ability, reduce muscle soreness, and manage stress to boot. Epsom salt baths!
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate and it's the sulfate part that is especially supportive of detoxification. Sulfate is a necessary element of the sulfation pathway which occurs in the liver and is responsible for the breakdown of several compounds including hormones (especially estrogen and testosterone), neurotransmitters, certain pharmaceuticals, and environmental chemicals. Sulfur can also be found in foods such as garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower so eating these regularly is especially beneficial. This pathway results in the removal of toxins through the urine, so staying well hydrated is important as well.
Back to Epsom salt baths. The best way to enjoy an Epsom salt bath is to place around 2 cups of Epsom salt into the bath and soak for at least 20 minutes once per week. I like to add 1-2 drops of essential oils (like lavender, rosemary, or clary sage) to the salt before it goes into the bath. The magnesium part of Epsom salt is very relaxing so doing this in the evening can help with sleep or relieve sore muscles after a hard workout. Be sure to drink some water during and after the bath to promote urination and kidney function.
One last note, Epsom salt is readily available in grocery stores but avoid scented versions. They are usually full of artificial fragrance with is...you guessed it. A toxin. Stick with essential oils if you want a scent with your bath. Here is one of my favorite recipes:
2 cups Epsom salt
1 drop essential of lavender
2 drops essential oil of orange
~Mix the 3 ingredients together and add to warm bath. Soak for 20 minutes, breathing deeply to relax. Avoid scrolling on your phone. Try reading, journaling, listening to music, or meditating instead. Follow by drinking a large glass of water and some stretching to maximize the benefits.
